Bill’s Lesson on Frank Frazetta CLIP

From Plymptoons.

Here’s another episode of Bill Plympton’s lessons on his favorite Artists who inspire him – Frank Frazetta

In this lesson, Bill imparts the wisdom of the importance of high-contrast illustration, a staple in Frank’s comic book built style. Thick black lines and shadows create drama against a flat white background, working within the negative space of each respective shade to imply lighting.

Frazetta was no stranger to experimenting with styles, from semi-realistic and full-color pieces to simplistic "cartoonish" animal characters, all seen within the same book.

Another one of Bill’s favorites – Ralph Bakshi – Also makes an appearance in this book, Bakshi having worked directly with Frazetta.
