Bill’s Private Animation Lesson 2025 – Class 6 CLIP

From Plymptoons.

Bill Plympton’s School of Animation continues with a private lesson for an aspiring animator, where he shares his trade secrets, inspirations, and techniques.

In this session, Mr. Plympton guides his student through the process of Animation, explaining the element of Timing and the relationship that it has to Movement. In the student film, there is a drummer making a lot of noise and Bill explains the benefit to animating on "2’s and 3’s" – Meaning the amount of times a drawing repeats before moving into the next drawing in the sequence. He also touches on when and when not to use in-betweens to give the appearance of speed.

Class 6 is over the halfway point of our curriculum where the lessons are now comprised less of observational learning and lean farther into hands-on drawing and absorbing the knowledge through experience and experimentation. Since the majority of this lesson comprised of the student drawing on their own, in combination with the lack of quality to the POV drawing footage as the result of exploration of recording techniques, we’ve edited in a video from a different Bill Plympton class of him animating a different scene from the same short. Please wait until the end to catch this as he also brings out an X-Sheet, timing out the animation.
